NWS Forecast Accuracy
Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Whitefish Mountain Resort and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Local Knowledge
TGR Community IntelStorm Day Strategy
Whitefish receives variable storm activity; storms often graze resort with light accumulation while dropping significantly north. Early season requires multiple feet of accumulation to bury rock/shrubbery. March typically transitions to spring skiing with brief heavy cycles possible (dense snow that improves by day 2-3 of freeze cycles). April storms are typically warm/wet and create mashed potatoes conditions rather than skiable powder.
Terrain Opening Patterns
Backside
Opens: Early season (late November)
Backside terrain more forgiving for early season; trees need adequate coverage
Frontside
Opens: After backside; typically by early December with sufficient snowpack
Chair 1 (main chairlift) serves frontside; groomers prioritized early season
Powder Stashes
Side country locations
Adjacent to resort boundaries
Retains depth better than in-bounds terrain; accessible to skiers with touring equipment
Trees/Gladed terrain
Throughout mountain
Trees on backside need substantial snow base; spring freeze-thaw cycles improve texture
