Route Options

Backup airport. Similar to SFO. Often cheaper flights on budget carriers.
Ground Transport
Often cheaper rental rates than SFO. Same route and conditions. AWD/4WD essential.
Primary airport. Route 1 (Carson Pass, east): Hwy 395/580 South to Minden, Hwy 88 West over Carson Pass. Route 2 (via South Tahoe): I-80 West to Truckee, Hwy 89/50 to SLT, then Hwy 89 South to Hwy 88 — longer (~2.5hrs) but avoids Carson Pass from east. Storm conditions 3–6hrs. Carson Spur (west side) is highly avalanche-prone.
Ground Transport
RNO to South Lake Tahoe, ~$35–45 one way, 10 departures daily, pickup at Door D. Kirkwood is 35 min from SLT — need car or rideshare for last leg. No direct Kirkwood shuttle exists.
Same RNO rental center. AWD/4WD ESSENTIAL — Kirkwood access roads are mountain roads. R2/R3 chain controls common on Hwy 88. Parking free, usually plenty of space. Carson Spur closes in ~70–80% of major storm events.
$150–$250+ from RNO direct. Very limited rideshare near Kirkwood. From SLT to Kirkwood: $60–$100 if you can find a driver.
Secondary airport. Hwy 16 East or Hwy 99 South to Hwy 88 East through Jackson, over Carson Spur to Kirkwood. Carson Spur is the most avalanche-prone road in the Tahoe region — closes frequently for 6–24+ hrs. Alternative: Hwy 50 East to SLT, then Hwy 89 South to 88 (avoids Spur from west). Storm conditions 4–7hrs.

On-airport rental center. $60–$150/day for SUV. Carson Spur closure is the primary concern. AWD/4WD essential.
Alternate airport. 200 miles, 3.5–4 hours clear. Same Hwy 88/Carson Spur concerns as SMF route.
