Route Options
Pre-researched routes from major origin cities. Drive times are airport → resort.
Often cheaper flights than SFO, especially Southwest and budget carriers. Same I-80 route to Tahoe. Marginally closer than SFO, saves ~15min.
Ground Transport
Same route and conditions as SFO. Often cheaper rental rates. AWD/4WD recommended for Sierra portion.
Primary airport, shortest drive. I-80 West to Truckee Exit 188A, then Hwy 89 South 10mi to Olympic Valley. Storm conditions 90–120min. I-80 over Donner Summit gets chain controls frequently. Road can close entirely 2–4 times per major storm event.
Ground Transport
Pickup at baggage claim between doors A and B. ~6 departures daily, 10am–midnight. Reserve 24hrs ahead. Drops at Tahoe City or Truckee; connect via free TART bus or weekend Park & Ride shuttle to resort (Dec 27–Apr 12, 2026).
$90–$180 one way depending on demand. Surge pricing common during storms. Return rides FROM Olympic Valley are very difficult — limited drivers.
Consolidated rental car center at airport. $80–$200/day for SUV in ski season. HIGH sell-out risk on storm weekends — book 1–2 weeks ahead. AWD/4WD strongly recommended to avoid chain hassle at R2 control. Parking at resort requires reservation on weekends/holidays.
Secondary airport. I-80 East through Auburn, Colfax, up to Donner Summit, exit Truckee 188A, Hwy 89 South. Same I-80 Donner Summit bottleneck. Storm conditions 3–5hrs. Can be cheaper flights than RNO.
Ground Transport
On-airport rental center. $60–$150/day for SUV. MODERATE sell-out risk. Same I-80 Donner Summit chain controls and closures as RNO route. AWD/4WD recommended.
$200–$350 one way. Expensive but viable if rental cars sold out. Consider splitting with other travelers.
Massive hub with most flight options. I-80 East across Bay Bridge through Sacramento, then up I-80 to Donner Summit, Hwy 89 South. Storm conditions 5–8hrs. Plan to drive the night before the storm.
Ground Transport
Roundtrip bus from Bay Area to Palisades Tahoe on select dates. ~$99 roundtrip historically. Check schedule for availability.
Rental car center via AirTrain. $60–$140/day for SUV. LOW to MODERATE sell-out risk — huge inventory. AWD/4WD recommended for Sierra portion. Same I-80 summit concerns.
$350–$500+ one way. Not practical for most travelers.
