Route Options
Pre-researched routes from major origin cities. Drive times are airport → resort.
Primary seasonal airport for major hub connections. United flies SFO–BIH daily (Dec 11–Apr 4, 2026) and DEN–BIH daily (Dec 18–Apr 27, 2026). ERJ175 aircraft. Best option for storm chasers flying from major airports. Hwy 395 North to Hwy 203 West. Storm conditions 60–90min.
Ground Transport
Shared from $30/person. Private SUV from $100/trip. Call 760-937-8294. Very limited Uber/Lyft in Bishop.
Shared shuttle $65/person one way ($130 RT). Private shuttles for groups. Reserve in advance — limited capacity.
Limited inventory at BIH — reserve ASAP (72+ hrs ahead). $80–$200/day. AWD/4WD vehicles sell out first. AWD/4WD recommended for Hwy 203 and local roads.
Backup — long drive. Hwy 14 North to Hwy 395 North. Mostly desert until Mammoth. Hwy 203 from 395 into Mammoth Lakes can be treacherous in storms. Storm conditions 6–8hrs. Many SoCal storm chasers drive this route.
Ground Transport
Rental car is the only practical option from LA. 5+ hour drive via Hwy 14/395. AWD/4WD recommended for final mountain stretch.
Closest airport, seasonal only. Advanced Air operates from Carlsbad (CLD) and Hawthorne (HHR) in SoCal on Mon/Thu/Fri/Sun during winter (Nov 27–Apr 27, 2026). Small aircraft ~30 seats. Sells out on powder weekends. No jet service from major hubs. Flights may divert to Bishop (BIH) in bad weather.
Ground Transport
Shared from $15–$30/person; private SUV $50–$100. Mammoth Cabs: 760-924-2227. Sierra Shuttle: 760-914-2746.
Very limited inventory at MMH (maybe 5–10 cars). Book days ahead. National is new for 2025–26 season. 10 min to town. Free ESTA town shuttle means you may not need a car once in Mammoth.
Year-round airport with full airline service. Hwy 395 South the entire way — mostly valley/desert driving. Last stretch through Mammoth can be icy. 395 rarely closes between Reno and Mammoth. Good fallback if BIH flights sell out. Storm conditions 4–6hrs.
Ground Transport
Standard RNO rental center. 3+ hour drive via Hwy 395 South. AWD/4WD recommended. Free ESTA town transit eliminates need for car once in Mammoth.
Private SUV transfer from Reno ~$500+. Expensive. ESTA CREST regional bus exists but not practical for storm chasing.
