NWS Forecast Accuracy
Accuracy grade pending, and it stays that way on purpose. We show the raw NWS forecast for Mammoth Mountain and do not grade or correct it. Six winters of NWS-against-SNOTEL checking found forecast accuracy here turns on an unresolved snow-measurement question (settled snow depth vs. fresh snowfall), not a fixed per-mountain bias anyone can honestly correct. So we show the number NWS publishes and tell you that is what it is.

Local Knowledge
TGR Community IntelStorm Day Strategy
Storm days are highly variable and challenging. February 13-14 storm produced whiteout conditions with zero visibility ('snow globe effect'). Route 395 closed (18 miles north of Bishop to June Lake). Approach: (1) Arrive at mountain with low expectations and visibility assessment; (2) Early morning arrivals acceptable but conditions worsen as day progresses; (3) Chair 4 opens first but visibility may be extreme whiteout - only ski if experienced in flat light; (4) Chair 8 skiable with poor visibility if comfortable; (5) Have backup accommodation plan (Bishop lodging recommended); (6) 2+ feet of overnight snow typical but forecasts conservative; (7) Heavy wind development expected after initial snow bands - avoid exposed high terrain once winds increase; (8) Only ski storm days 'if you know what you don't know' - conditions unpredictable and potentially dangerous; (9) Be prepared to call it after 1-4 hours if visibility/conditions deteriorate. Locals: avoid committing to must-ski storm days for visiting.
